Help! My sister is being deceived! - 04/15/2004

Dear Contender Ministries, I received an email from my cousin and I answered all that I could but I would really appreciate it if you would help me out because he has alot of influence on my little sister and her friends. Also if you could list how you get the facts that you have and your qualifications ot be speaking on such a matter because I know he will try to say that you are biased and are bending facts to fit Christianity.

Here is exactly what he sent to me:

and the bible is not clear at all. to understand how worthless it is as a factual book you must look at how it was passed down. it was transcribed, and retranscribed, and translated, and transcribed etc. people threw in whatever they wanted to. cardinals had their own way with it. very little can be looked on as fact anymore. im sure jesus was a great guy and all, but half of that stuff never happened. ill bet my soul on it. im hardly what you'd call religious to a western faith. the only people that are so devout are people that need something to lean on and cant deal with their own lives. im cold, but i know what i think. im sorry, but getting kicked out of a garden because a snake told a girl to eat some fruit? Man's original fall? you dont see that as ridiculous? even taking it as the metaphor as Adam means man and Eve means life...man was tempted by life. but still. its ridiculous. what kind of god would deny his favorite beings knowledge of life? You'd think he'd want them to flourish an your god made everything in 6 days? What kind of calendar is that. He may have made the basis for man, he didn’t just plunk one guy down and go, "Here ya go, fend for yourself." What kind of sick joke is that? You sound like a religious zealot saying dinosaurs never existed and that they’re a cruel joke played by scientists and that carbon dating is a joke. We've been here a helluva lot longer than 10,000 years kiddo. Everyone knows that. You want proof we evolved? Hand an 80 year old man and a monkey a camera. They’ll both end up flashing it in their eyes and be confused, the only difference is we don’t throw our crap at people afterwards. That’s what evolution has done. We don’t throw our crap. Its a beautiful thing really. And I’m done with this ridiculous discussion cuz seriously, its dumb.

Please help me out, I don't want my little sister to be deceived by him!

Thank You in advanced for your help now and all the help your website has provided me with, I really appreciate it! God Bless you and your noble cause.

Sincerely,
Katy

CONTENDER MINISTRIES RESPONSE:

Hi Katy.  Thanks for writing to us.  I'm sorry you're having these problems.  Your cousin sounds hard-hearted, and it may very well be that all you can do is pray for him -- which is a lot, really.

As for the contents of his email, I hardly know where to begin.  He jumped around quite a bit, and I may have to as well.  I'll try to answer everything though.

Let's start with evolution.  Dinosaurs DID exist.  That much is fact.  They did NOT exist millions or billions of years ago.  Creation scientists believe they were killed off during the great flood.  Either there was no room for them on the ark (which satellite photos show on Mt. Ararat in Turkey under the ice), or the flood decimated a great deal of their food supply, or the atmospheric changes that occurred were responsible for their death.  The Old Testament refers to large creatures referred to as "Behemoth" and "Leviathon" that scientists believe were dinosaurs.  The fact that fossils of human footprints have been found within dinosaur footprints confirms that man and dinosaurs co-existed.  Some noted evolutionists confirm that it takes at LEAST as much faith to accept Darwinian evolution as it does to believe in "the mysteries of religion."  So why don't more evolutionists admit that Darwinism is unscientific?  Because they commit the scientific error of starting with their conclusion that there is no God.  When they start from that point, they exclude all evidence that indicates otherwise.  There are a lot of scientists out there who believe in creationism though.  The Center for Scientific Creation, and the Institute for Creation Research have a lot of literature your cousin might want to read.  He should also read the book "Darwin's Black Box" or "Darwin's God."  These books were written by scientists, and are full of scientific evidence that debunks evolution.  There's an article on the site about the problems with C14 dating.  There's also a good article on that at Creation Worldview Ministries.  Anyone that is educated in the C14 dating process will tell you that C14 dating is only accurate for a few thousand years.  Even then, there are frequent errors, because the process assumes a steady ratio of Carbon 12 to Carbon 14 in the atmosphere throughout time.  However, an event such as the great flood would have caused a drastic change in that ratio.  Your cousin's "defense" of evolution is obviously uneducated and silly, not to mention wrong.

Scientist L.T. More said, “The more one studies paleontology, the more certain one becomes that evolution is based on faith alone; exactly the same sort of faith which is necessary to have when one encounters the great mysteries of religion…the only alternative is the doctrine of special creation, which may be true, but is irrational.”

Dr. David Raup, curator of geology at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago states that the “250,000 species of plants and animals recorded and deposited in museums throughout the world did not support the gradual unfolding hoped for by Darwin.”

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Dr. Robert A. Millikan, in a speech before the American Chemical Society, said, “The pathetic thing about it is that many scientists are trying to prove the doctrine of evolution, which no science can do.”

The above quotes and more are listed in another email response you should read here: http://www.contenderministries.org/mail/evolution06162003.php  And your cousin should also check out "Questions for Evolutionists."

Your cousin is also uneducated in the transcription and translation of the Bible.  He refers to changes made by the Roman Catholic Church, but those changes only effect the Latin Vulgate Bible, and hence, the English translation of the Vulgate.  The NIV and NASB are excellent translations based on texts that date to the third century AD.  In fact, some of the New Testament manuscripts date to the 2nd Century AD!!  This was before the Roman Catholic Church existed!  The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls has confirmed the accurate transcription and translation of the Old Testament.  There ARE some slight textual variants between manuscripts, but they add up to less than 1% of the Bible, and they affect no key doctrines!  Again, if your cousin wanted to form an educated opinion on this, there are many worthwhile books he can read.

Your cousin's final contention has to do with the nature of God.  Many people who believe there is a God, believe only that God is love.  That's true, but God is also just.  As such, like a loving parent, He established rules for us to live by.  Those rules were designed to protect us, not test us.  Being a loving God, He gave us free will.  Being a just God, He set down consequences for disobedience (sin).  The consequence of sin is an eternity in hell.  Mankind chose that by disobeying God.  Yet God is love, and gave us one last chance to have eternity in Heaven, through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  Having free will, this is a chance we must CHOOSE to accept.  The alternative is condemnation.  Your cousin may choose not to believe that, but he chooses that at his own peril.  I may choose to believe that the law of gravity is silly.  After all, I can't see it, touch it, taste it, or smell it, and it really gets in the way when I trip over my shoelaces.  However, the law of gravity does not depend on my belief or disbelief.  God's nature and His law are eternal and unchangeable as well.  They don't depend on someone’s belief or disbelief.  There's a concept called "Pascal's Wager" which may come into play with your cousin.  Pascal's wager, as it pertains to God's law, is this:  If we as Christians are wrong, what happens to our soul when we die?  Nothing?  Yet if we are right, and your cousin refuses to accept that, what happens to his soul when he dies?  The answer is an eternity in hell.  Pascal's wager would dictate that submission to God and acceptance of salvation through Jesus Christ costs nothing, but could save us our very souls.  Your cousin thinks that God and faith are a crutch.  In a sense, he's right.  Humans are predisposed to screw everything up on our own accord.  Look at the last century alone -- two World Wars, numerous other wars, two nuclear weapons detonated, the extermination of millions of Jews...a great testament to the nature of man, don't you think?  We NEED God if we are to not only spend eternity in Heaven, but also to survive ourselves.

Our qualifications for speaking on this?  Prayer, and years of reading and study.  You can do this too, Katy.  Everyone can.  All this information is out there, and you don't need a master’s degree in divinity or theology to learn it.  A few bucks in late fees on your library account will go a looooong way! :)  And God promises us wisdom if we simply ask for it.  That means prayer.  Pray for your cousin and your sister, Katy.  The truth will prevail.  God bless you as you contend for the faith.

In Christ,

Ben and Jennifer Rast
