Joseph Smith and Freemasonry - 07/02/2004
I was reading your article on freemasonry and it mentions that Joseph Smith
was a Mason. I have been trying to prove this to my Mormon relatives but I
can't find anything concrete. The paragraph that says Smith was a mason has
(Documentary History of the Church 4:550-551) next to it. But Im told that
is not in the book of mormon, so where can I find that passage to see what
it says ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
thank you,
- Diaz III (a baptist with the heart of a penticostal)
CONTENDER MINISTRIES RESPONSE:
Hi Diaz. The Documentary History of the Church, by Joseph Smith Jr.,
can be obtained through Deseret Books ( http://deseretbook.com/store/product?product_id=100015096).
This is a seven-volume set. A set of hardbacks runs about $100, whereas the
paperbacks are about $50. Don't confuse this with the Comprehensive History
of the Church, by B.H. Roberts. The key part we referenced is from journal
entries made by Smith in March, 1842:
Tuesday, 15.-I officiated as grand chaplain at the installation of the
Nauvoo Lodge of Free Masons, at the Grove near the Temple. Grand Master
Jonas, of Columbus, being present, a large number of people assembled on
the occasion. The day was exceedingly fine; all things were done in order,
and universal satisfaction was manifested. In the evening I received the
first degree in Free Masonry in the Nauvoo Lodge, assembled in my general
business office...
Wednesday, March 16.-I was with the Masonic Lodge and rose to the
sublime degree.
For more information regarding the Mormon - Freemasonry connection, you
should check out the Masonic Moroni website here:
http://www.masonicmoroni.com/Menu.htm Be advised though, that this site
is the creation of someone who is both Mormon and Mason. Don't be looking
for true Christian doctrine here. It's simply a good site for documenting
the historical connection between Mormonism and Freemasonry. May the Lord
bless you as you contend for the faith.
In Christ,
Ben and Jennifer Rast
